As promised, I am back to bust another myth about the BDSM lifestyle. Last time, we took on the myth that dominants are abusive. This time, we’ll explore the myth that submissives are weak doormats. Again, so not true. Clyde and I have a classic dominant/submissive relationship as far as bondage and BDSM is concerned. However, I am far from a weak doormat! Think about it; only someone with a strong and assured personality could easily give up control to someone she trusts completely. If not for that, it would not be a truly consensual relationship–if the dominant really, truly oppressed the submissive.
In fact, according to Dr. Laura Berman (whom we have quoted in these pages before), “Being dominated and out of control can feel very sexy, especially if you are someone who is typically in control and juggling many responsibilities at once. It can be very freeing and erotic to simply relinquish those responsibilities and tap into your sexual side without any guilt or pressure.”
This is so true for me, and for many others we have heard from in our years of supplying beautiful bondage furniture. Many women end up corresponding with me, and I can think of very few, if any, who have come across as completely dominated by their partners in all aspects of their life.
Of course, people into bondage and BDSM come from all walks of life, and I cannot speak for everyone. The point here is that this myth of some sort of universal fact that anyone and everyone who is involved in bondage or BDSM is being abused because he/she is totally lacking in self-esteem, is categorically false.
